Calorie Counter by MyFitnessPal
[Price: Free with in app purchases]
MyFitnessPal is on all of the app lists for this sort of thing and that’s because it’s the most popular with more than a staggering ten million downloads and a 4.6 rating in the Play Store. It comes with all the features including a database with over two million foods, full sync with their website service so you can count calories cross platform, a recipe calculator so you can see how much nutrition a home cooked meal will have, and the ability to add multiple items at once. There is also a pretty decent fitness tracker with 350 exercises and covers both cardio and strength training. It’s about the best all-in-one solution you can find.
Calorie Counter PRO MyNetDiary
[Price: Free with in app purchases]
This up and coming calorie counter by MyNetDiary is good if you want something involved but not as ridiculous as MyFitnessPal. There are over 600,000 foods in their database and that grows daily. It comes with a barcode scanner, info on 45 nutrients, and a pretty nifty way to get them to add foods for you by taking a picture and sending it in. Everything syncs with their official website at mynetdiary.com and it’s a pretty decent way to track your diet.
Diet Assistant – Weight Loss
[Price: Free / $2.99]
Diet Assistant takes a more minimal approach than many of these other apps. That means it doesn’t have the raw resources that the others have but it is still an effective app. You can take a more hands on approach with things like an integrated shopping list, diet and weight loss tips, built-in BMI calculator, and some diet plans. If you adhere to a more unusual or uncommon diet, this may not help you but for many it should. There’s a free version and a paid version so you can try it before you buy it.
Diet Point – Weight Loss
[Price: Free with in app purchases]
Diet Point is another app that puts most of the power in your hands. It contains more than 130 diet plans complete with dedicated shopping lists, tips to improve your weight loss plan, a BMI calculator, and it’ll even remind you when it’s time for you to eat again. It’s a solid and minimal choice but there have been some people that have had issues with the pro version. Thankfully it’s free so you can try it out and it is a solid app, just be cautious when you get their pro version (if you do).
Diet Watchers Diary
[Price: $2.19]
Diet Watchers Diary may be the most complicated app on this list but it also allows for a lot of personal customization. With this app, instead of relying on a database, you construct your own diet by hand. It comes with a weight tracker, themes, widgets, and various calculators for various things. It rocks a 4.6 rating in the Play Store with more than ten thousand downloads but, again, it is a little more hands-on than other apps so prepare for that. It’s also worth noting that there isn’t a free version of this app so if you buy it, make sure you test it before the refund time runs out!
Fooducate Healthy Weight Loss
[Price: Free with in app purchases]
Fooducate is something a little bit different. It still lets you track your food intake, calories, and exercise like most of these. However, it goes a step further and actually helps you identify harmful ingredients in your foods. This can help you decide not to get something to eat if there is something bad in it such as high fructose corn syrup or trans fats. The app will grade foods based on this info and help you to pick more healthy things.
Lose It!
[Price: Free with in app purchases]
Lose It! is another popular application that does pretty much everything you need a calorie counting app to do. It comes with a food database, dietary plans based on your needs, the barcode scanner, and there is more if you buy the premium version. This is also one of the few apps on this list that has exercise hardware support like Jawbone Up and FitBit tracker. It can also integrated with other apps like MyFitnessPal and Runkeeper which is a nice bonus.
My Diet Coach – Weight Loss
[Price: Free]
My Diet Coach takes a different approach to weight loss by helping users to tackle the mental aspect of it. These other apps focus on the numbers and the like but it is mentally difficult to turn down that delicious pizza and eat arguably less delicious Brussels sprouts. The app’s design is old fashioned to put it politely but there are some fun features. You can take “motivational photos” of yourself so you can watch yourself lose weight over time. There are also tips, tricks, and a reward system in place to make you feel better about yourself when you don’t fail. It doesn’t have the technical stuff that these other apps have so your best bet is to get one of them to track the numbers and pick this up (if needed) for some encouragement.
