Word on the street is Apple is aiming to introduce a third size of its iPad Pro, currently offered in 12.9 and 9.7-inch variants. A recent research note from KGI Securities analyst Ming Chi Kuo, who frequently comments on Apple — much of the time quite accurately — describes Apple’s plans for the iPad family.
Kuo said Apple hopes to introduce a new 10.5-inch model sometime next year that will exist between the two current models. His note suggests Apple may be moving away from the iPad mini family. Kuo said that the 10.5-inch model will be joined by a 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2 and another 9.7-inch iPad that’s more affordable.
“We expect three new iPads (12.9” iPad Pro 2, new size 10.5” iPad Pro & low-cost 9.7” iPad) to be launched in 2017, though this may not drive shipment growth amid structural headwinds; 2017F shipments to fall 10-20% YoY,”Kuo said in his note, obtained by MacRumors.
Kuo also said that Apple has a “revolutionary iPad model” planned for fiscal 2018 “with radical changes in form factor design and user behavior on adoption of flexible AMOLED panel.” AMOLED panels have long been in use by Android manufacturers, specifically Samsung, and the technology is also expected in Apple’s 2017 iPhone.
