Just because your Xperia Tablet S has all the bells and whistles you want from an Android tablet, including Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich and an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, doesn’t mean you can’t experience some impressive retro games on it too. Here are 5 from the Google Play Store that let you relive the days of yore in style.
A classic of the Amiga era, Another World is a tense, atmospheric adventure game that sees you teleported into an alien landscape and forced to fight for your life against the local flora and fauna. Almost everything in the game is out to get you, from bubbling pools of acid to the hulking guards who patrol some screens, and a single touch spells doom. Tough but rewarding, Another World is an evocative step back in time.
An arcade legend presented with its retro graphics intact, or with a new layer of polish if you prefer, Boulder Dash is all about collecting diamonds, clearing out cave systems, and trying to avoid getting crushed to death by falling rocks. Or blown up by bombs. A clever action puzzle game that’s aged remarkably well, the many versions of Boulder Dash on offer here should keep you entertained into the wee small hours.
Let’s be honest, you don’t get much more retro than a pinball game, and who isn’t enticed by flashing lights, the ring of ball bearings smashing into scoring pads, and the last second flick that turns your score from a modest total into a ridiculous achievement. There are plenty of tables for you to play, including Marvel themed ones, and everything about the game is slick and gorgeous. Much better than a cigarette stained machine in a dingy seaside arcade.
A brilliant conversion of one of the few great games that came out for the Sega Mega CD, mixing classic 2D platforming with 3D sections and ending up with one of the last truly unmissable Sonic games. As well as introducing some new characters to the Sonic mythos, Sonic CD also features some of the very best levels to ever grace the series. Hardly anyone played the original, so it definitely deserves some love this time round.
Another game that’s retro in spirit only, PewPew is a glorious top down shooter that takes the best bits of Asteroids and Space Invaders, whips them up with some neon colours and touch screen controls, then serves with a side of hideously addictive gameplay and big explosions. PewPew is the perfect high score chaser for a rainy afternoon, and it’s ever toughening challenges make it a must buy for fans of hardcore gaming.
