When we at Life Of Android give apps like the ABBYY Business Card Reader a spin, it’s almost as if we are living the Quantum Leap dream. If the Quantum Leap dream is being able to scan business cards in 19 different languages and store their details on your Android smartphone then we are definitely living it.
There’s really not much to the ABBYY Business Card Reader, perhaps not the greatest admission when you’re charging £6.13 for your services. For the large part however, the app benefits from its simplicity since grabbing the crucial details is a point and click affair – a swish scanning animation runs over the photo while it checks for numbers and text and the next thing you know the final results are presented in a neat form which can be saved straight to your contacts list.
It’s incredibly convenient and relatively speedy too. In fact it’s a mark of the ABBYY Business
Card Reader’s success that its troubles stem from comparison to its competitors rather than flaws in its own programming. Like CamCard BCR, ABBYY struggles to translate eclectically designed cards and finds low light something of a hindrance to its text recognitions skills. ABBYY, also like Camcard, has a try-before-you-buy ‘Lite’ version, although ABBYY’s restricts data storage to name and phone number only rather than limiting the number of scans you’re allowed.
Judging the the two apps paid-for incarnations against each other, your decision on which to plump for is ultimately going to come down to price. ABBYY costs a full £1.82 more than CamCard BCR and there’s not a huge difference between them to justify why. Although ABBYY claims to be able to recognise three more languages than its rival and also boasts the nifty ability to source any contact’s social media account from their business card, that’s not a deal-breaker for most of us and certainly doesn’t go far enough to justify the difference in price.
The Bottom Line
ABBYY Business Card Reader has a great user interface and, for the large part, works a treat. Sadly its weighty price tag makes CamCard BCR the better buy… For now.
