Coming this June is a great new iPhone accessory for drivers called the Next GATE by Clarion. The Next GATE is essentially an “in-vehicle iPhone enhancer” that lets you control your iPhone from a 7-inch touch-screen display that sits right on your dash. While the Next GATE is going to be pretty pricy (it’s expected to go for $269.99 at launch), it looks like it’ll give you what you pay for.
Arguably the best feature is access to some of your apps right from the device. These include popular apps like Pandora and TuneIn to provide you with streaming Internet radio, INRIX Traffic to provide you with traffic information while you drive, Vlingo for voice recognition features, and InfoGation for navigation and mapping. While these are the only apps that will be available at launch, more are in development and will be launched and available for download through Clarion’s Smart Access Cloud Telematics Service.
Other highlights of the Next GATE include Bluetooth compatibility, microphone and audio output via auxiliary jack, a built-in speaker, a microSD slot, the ability to connect and charge your iPhone directly through the Next GATE, and more. Only the iPhone 4 and 4S will be compatible with the Next GATE, however, so owners of older models are unfortunately out of luck.
Even though the Next GATE’s pricing almost rivals the 32GB iPhone 4S, its many functionalities—like the ability to use optimized iOS apps right from your car’s dash—are very tempting. You can pick one up through Crutchfield and Amazon for $269.99 starting on June 1st.
