When Samsung first announced its new flagship device, the Galaxy S III, there were initial rumors that owners of existing MHL-HDMI adapters would be forced to get new cables, due to changes made to the device’s pin layout.
Unfortunately, these rumors were quickly confirmed, and word began to spread about a new official adapter that would allow you to connect your shiny new S3 to a big screen HDTV.
Since we’ve done a rundown of Galaxy S III accessories in the past few weeks, I figured we might as well throw this one into the mix too, especially considering the amount of people who own both this amazing phone and a HDTV.
There isn’t a whole lot to this one, so expect a quick review.
The HDTV Universal Adapter (11pin) supports HD signals up to 1080p. It connects directly to your MHL-enabled mobile phone with an 11-pin Micro USB input to create an HDMI docking station. Then, you connect a standard HDMI cable for easy connectivity to a home theater or monitor.
In order to function, the adapter also needs to be connected to a power source via the Micro USB port on the adapter itself. This means, when you have your phone connected to the adapter, you’re charging your battery at the same time — awesome sauce, taking into consideration the amount of battery it takes to pump out 1080p video.
Nice to be able to watch videos and play games from your phone on a big screen
Keeps your phone charged while using HDMI output
What I Dislike
Incompatible with Multimedia Dock (stay tuned for that review, coming soon)
No HDMI cable included (for $40, there should be at least a 3ft cable included)
I can’t call this a must-have accessory, but it’s definitely a nice one to own, especially if you’re into playing games on your Android device(s). I will say I think it’s a bit pricey, but hey — I’m just cheap and broke. (Ah, the life of an indie blogger, eh?)
If you’d like to pick one up and try it out for yourself, head on over to the Samsung Store and be prepared to drop a cool $39.99. For a limited time, Sammy is even throwing in a free Galaxy S III Navy Blue Leather Pouch with any purchase of a Galaxy S III specific accessory.
If you’d like to save a couple bucks, you can pick one up from Amazon for only $34.95 — who doesn’t like to save money, eh?
