Adobe Proto is the third of the Touch Apps suite to come under Life Of Android’s gaze, following on from the outstanding Photoshop Touch and the patchy Adobe Collage. A basic web page design app which does a good job of laying out some rough sketches, Proto could do with a lot more detail before it becomes an essential download.
There’s a specific kind of person that’s going to use Adobe Proto and that’s someone employed in the web design industry. If you’re thinking of getting into the Internet game with a standard WordPress template, then don’t bother shelling £6.99 on this design app.
That’s not to say Adobe Proto is particularly detailed for the price, just you’re more likely to get your value for money out of it if you’re in the business of making multiple website templates. Templates are all this creative app really does, moderately detailed black and white templates. You can lay down boxes for text, pictures and video but only actually fill out the text boxes.
This is particularly frustrating, since these features are incorporated in the Adobe Collage app we reviewed just yesterday and there’s no real reason why they haven’t made the transition over here. We suppose Adobe would say they were trying to keep things simple but that should be the user’s choice, not the developer’s.
To test the app out, we replicated Life Of Android’s design on our Google-powered tablet. Using the app’s gesture shortcuts, where drawing a triangle creates a video box and scribbling a cross creates a picture box, we were able to achieve our task in no time at all but there weren’t any other tools to embellish our box-ridden page. Not even a block colour filling option. It made us sad.
So basically Adobe Proto makes the easy bits of web page design really easy and doesn’t attempt the hard bits at all. With some more features, this app could be a really excellent addition to any creative’s Android tablet. As things stand, we’d classify it as inessential.
The Bottom Line
A web design app that does the easy bits well and doesn’t bother with the rest.
