Amazon just surprised us with a brand new Kindle. The new Kindle is thinner and lighter than the previous models, and it will serve as the brand new entry-level product in Amazon’s Kindle family of eReaders.
The new Kindle features a 6-inch glare-free touchscreen with 167-pixels per inch (ppi), Wi-Fi, “weeks” of battery life and storage for thousands of books. It measures 6.3-inches x 4.5-inches x 0.36-inches and weighs 5.7oz. At $79.99, it’s a great deal, but it’s also far inferior to devices like the Kindle Paperwhite which offer a backlight, a sharper 300ppi display and optional support for 3G networks. Hardcore readers might also choose the Kindle Voyage ($199) with more backlights and an even thinner design, or the new $289 Kindle Oasis, my favorite eReader on the market right now.
Finally, for the first time in a while, Amazon is launching the Kindle in a white color option, too. And for folks who need a bit of an upgrade, the Kindle Paperwhite will also ship in white. Hit the source to grab yours; the new Kindle is set to ship on July 7.
