Bacon, ham, and sausage all come from the same animal, the pig. You wouldn’t think that a pig would make much of an action hero, but that’s because you haven’t seen Ammo Pigs. You get to play as a gun totting pig who needs to infiltrate sentient slaughterhouse machines to rescue baby pigs, save allies, and destroy the machines. Ammo Pigs delivers a side scrolling action platformer with retro inspired graphics and gameplay. Your goal is to blast everything that moves as you make your way through each of the 12 lengthy levels.
The action is set to high at all times with all kinds of mechanical enemies to face. There are gun robots, sentient spinning blades, big bosses, and all kinds of challenging opponents between you, and level success. The game increases in difficulty at a rapid rate, so we hope you like a challenge before diving into the Ammo Pigs action. The game is a bit frustrating at times due to some objects providing instant death, while others take one of your five hearts. Since the levels are on the long side, it’s definitely disappointing to restart at the beginning when you’re surprised by an instant death enemy. Most of the game lets you make a few mistakes with five hearts per level, which makes the outliers stand out that much more.
One of the best parts of the game is that the levels aren’t simply linear with off shooting pathways to go down. There are also various objectives beyond just completing a level to give you more to aim for, like taking out all of the light bulbs, collecting all of the coins, saving all of the baby pigs, or destroying all of a certain type of enemy. There’s simply a lot going on, and it’s all presented with such a well made retro style to transport you to the games of yesteryear. The game does include some tedious stretches of backtracking to a forked pathway to unlock the path forward, but that’s an exception. It would be nice to see some checkpoints, or shorter levels, as the longer levels can drag, especially for on the go gaming.
Ammo Pigs ($1.99, Universal) delivers a well made shoot ‘em up challenge that is worth picking up for some classic difficulty.
