Yesterday Google announced the latest update to Android, 4.2 as an incremental update to Jellybean, but it brings with it some exciting new features. Here are a few of the cool new features you can look forward to in the latest update.
Multi-User Support Android 4.2 brings with it brand new multi-user support only for tablets. If you’re sharing the tablet or using it in a classroom environment everyone can now have their own customized settings, apps, and data. If you and your roommate both use the device all you have to do is quickly switch users and you’ll have all of your content right in front of you. Your notes from class are separated and you can even have separate game save data because all you do is play Beach Buggy Blitz during your Advanced Macroeconomics course instead of actually paying attention. Switching between accounts is simple, Android is a great multi-tasker and that extends to the multi-user functionality, no logging in and out necessary!
Miracast Wireless Display Support Maybe you’re giving a presentation, or maybe you’ve gone to a friend’s place to study after class and you’ve got some great diagrams and notes on your Nexus 7 and you want to share it with everyone. You can now wirelessly display content from your device to any Miracast enabled TV or set-top box. Miracast is a newer standard that will let you stream YouTube, Google Play Music, and more to a TV or projector that has Miracast built in or you can even get a separate adapter that will connect to the TV and enable any Android 4.2 device to display content.
Gesture Typing The Android keyboard has been improved again, this time adding support for gesture typing which makes typing out messages faster than ever, you no longer have to tap out every letter. With gesture typing you can just swipe your finger across all the letters for the word and then lift your finger, the keyboard uses a smart algorithm to determine what word you meant to type based on the letters you touched and instantly types it out. You can then immediately start swiping the letters for the next word, the keyboard will automatically put a space in between for you! This will be a great feature to send out Google Talk messages or quick emails in class and quickly switch back to your notes without missing a beat!
There’s More! Those are just a few of the cool new features and updates in Android 4.2, it also brings a major update to Google Now, enhances the functionality of Android Beam by letting you share even more types of content, a quick settings toggle section in the notification bar, and more!
The update will be rolling out to the ASUS Nexus 7 in the very near future so make sure to keep an eye open for an update notification on your device. Availability for other ASUS devices has not yet been announced but keep an eye on CampusLife for news on any updates for all of our Android devices!
