Google’s Android Market has boomed in size to offer over 400,000 app downloads. According to Distimo, the app analytics experts, the Android Market’s app catalogue has grown by 100,000 offerings since August 2011.
Roughly two-thirds of the apps available through the Android Market are free to download. This figure is on the rise having grown from 60 per cent in April 2011 to 68 per cent by the end of the year.
Interestingly, while the Android Market took 2 months longer than Apple’s App Store to reach the 400,000 total, Google’s service now appears to be growing at quicker rate. Whereas the Android Market grew from 300,000 to 400,000 apps in four months, Apple took seven months to do the achieve the same milestone.
Distimo’s data also points to a second notable statistic, that is the Android Market has almost more than 100K publishers active in its app store. Each developer publishes 4.1 apps on average, a decline from last year’s five app average.
