Every day 850,000 little Android devices are brought to life, according to Andy Rubin, Google’s Senior VP. Speaking at Mobile World Congress’ first day – on that was arguably dominated by Android announcements – Rubin unleashed a stream of stats for numbers fans the world over.
He also highlighted the fact that Android Market now had 450,000 apps onboard, meaning that it is nearly running even with Apple’s App Store on 500,000. The store sees 1billion downloads every month.
As well as the astonishing activation figures, which puts Android as the world’s favourite OS, the total number of Android devices roaming in the wild is now thought to be at 300 million.
Rubin also addressed an area where Android need to play catch up – the tablet market. Obviously Android devices are currently trailing behind the success of the iPad, but Rubin is determined to “double down” on the current 12 million activated tablets. Rubin called this fugure “not insignificant, but less than I’d expect it to be if you really want to win” in this area. Look out iPad, Android’s coming after you!
