Any.DO is a simple app that helps you easily capture and organize everything you need to. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles you may find in other similar apps for managing tasks, lists, and to-dos – but this simplicity is definitely one of its strengths.
Not only is the Any.DO interface clean and pleasing to look at, but it has a few features tucked away that make it a breeze to use.
Any.DO is pretty!
Any.DO is actually the second iteration of an ongoing project to create the ultimate to-do list app. Founded in 2010, Any.DO was fueled by Omer Perchik’s frustration with his own procrastination and existing methods for getting things done. Most solutions were overly complex, so he set out to create a simpler tool that could be just as powerful for getting things done, but leave more time for fun.
After joining forces with Yoni Lindenfeld and Itay Kahana, the team launched a simple to do list app to get user feedback and test concepts. This app, known as Taskos, quickly became one of the most popular and well-known to do list apps on the Market. Now, learning from their previous success, Any.DO is born.
The first thing that you will notice about Any.DO is the user interface. It’s probably completely unlike anything you may have previously seen on Android. No boxy and plain widgets and buttons. No generic three-paned interface with a basic black background. Any.DO is actually pretty. It’s probably the prettiest app in existence for the Android platform. If you find another that is this well-designed and pleasing to look at, I’d like to know about it.
Any.DO Task Menu
Any.DO is not just a pretty face, though. You can easily add new items to your lists by typing or speaking (using the integrated voice input). Other apps will charge you for the privilege, but Any.DO has voice built right in. This sounds like a trivial feature, especially when most Android keyboards have a voice search button, but capture is probably the most important aspect of getting things done and one-tap voice input definitely streamlines the process.
Tap an existing task to set the Priority, move it to a Folder, set a Reminder, add a Note, or Share it with someone. Each text input provides the option for voice input.
Drag and Drop Tasks
There are a number of features, besides voice input and a nice interface, which set Any.DO apart from other to do list apps:
Contextual Auto-Complete – As you enter a to do item, Any.DO somehow guesses at what you want to type. I’m not sure how this feature works, but it’s extremely intuitive and saves you time. It’s eerily efficient.
Drag and Drop – Organize your tasks via simple drag-and-drop between folders, dates, and priorities.
Swipe to Complete – There are no check boxes in this to do app. When you’re done with a task, simply cross it off your list with a swipe of your finger.
Shake to Clear – Once you’ve actually got some things done and crossed off a few items, clear them from your list with a simple shake. I did find this feature a bit hard to activate, but that could be attributed to the fact that my Evo 4G is entering its golden months.
Sync with Google – One of my favorite features is syncing with Google. There are not many apps out there that are on the same level as Any.DO and sync with Google Tasks. As a Google fan, I’m already using Gmail and Google Tasks. It only makes sense to be able to tie it all together with an Android app and, for me, Any.DO is the perfect choice.
As a jack of all trades, father, and husband, I rely on my to-do list to make things happen. I’m almost constantly adding things to my list that others need my help with. For instance, I have clients that may need my help updating a website or doing some other semi-simple task. I may also have my wife telling me I need to grab something from the store or do some chores around the house. While I might remember to add these items to my to do list, it’s much easier for me if those needing my help can automatically send these tasks directly to Any.DO. This ensures I don’t forget and simplifies the process for all involved.
If you’re an Any.DO user, sharing a task is as simple as hitting the share button and typing in the recipient’s name. They don’t even need to be an Any.DO user to receive the task. If they are using Any.DO, the new to do item appears on their task list as well as yours. You can even share tasks with multiple people and view a list of everyone involved from within the app.
Any.DO Alternate Theme
I’ve been into organization, productivity, and getting things done for as long as I can remember. I’ve used just about any to do list app, methodology, website, and service you can think of. The problem is usually that, while well thought-out, many tools and ways for getting things done are just too involved. You spend more time managing and organizing the things you should be doing than you spend actually getting things done.
Any.DO provides the best of both worlds, giving you a powerful to do app with clear and simple functionality and interface. This means you don’t get bogged down in the details of capturing and managing the things you need to do. Any.DO is just getting started, so look out for new features like syncing with services besides Google and integration with your favorite web browser.
