The 86th annual Academy Awards will take place this Sunday beginning at 8:30PM ET/ 5:30PM PT. You will be able to watch the proceedings on your iOS device with the Watch ABC app, which has been updated with tons of capabilities over the years. The past two Oscar telecasts were available in the official Oscars iOS app, but this year ABC is incorporating the show right into their existing app. Similar features will be available with multiple camera angles to choose from along with red carpet, and after event coverage.
The main difference for 2014 is that the Watch ABC app comes with restrictions, since this a is a live broadcast. Only subscribers to AT&T U-Verse, Comcast, Cablevision, Cox, Charter, Google Fiber, Midcontinent Communications, or Verizon Fios will be able to access the stream. To take the restrictions further, you also need to live in one of eight broadcast markets, which are New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Houston, Raleigh-Durham, or Fresno. If you don’t have one of the eight providers, or live in one of the eight markets, then you can’t watch the Oscars live on your iOS device. The same restrictions apply to the online stream as well, but if you do align with the select providers, and markets you get the full package live for free on your iOS device. It’s especially disappointing, since anyone could watch The Oscars live on iOS the past two years without any restrictions.
The Oscars are set for this Sunday when we will see if American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity, Here, Nebraska, Philmena, 12 Years a Slave, or The Wolf of Wall Street takes home the top prize. You can find out live with Watch ABC (Free, Universal) on your iOS device if you’re lucky enough to have the right set-up.
