FreeThere are numerous ways to read the news on your iPhone that range from individual news apps to bite sized versions of the news from multiple sources, and many variations in between. Lumi News is a new iPhone app that emphasizes personalization to deliver a curated list of news from multiple sources, geared towards your preferences. Zite offered a similar idea, but after being acquired a couple of times, it was ultimately shelved. Lumi News comes from the makers of last.fm, and shares the idea of letting the user like or skip to allow the system to fine tune preferences. Instead of music with last.fm, it’s the news with Lumi.
Lumi News covers most news topics, and connects with most major publishers as well as indie blogs, and curates all of the content for each individual user. To get the best stories at start-up, you can connect your Facebook and Twitter accounts to give Lumi something to go on. Even if you don’t connect, you can swipe left to like any articles, or swipe right to pass, and Lumi will learn from your preferences. Lumi News offers the first paragraph, and you can swipe up to open the actual news source for the full article. The app is a quick learner, and soon you will have a list of stories that you will want to read through. The news can be like a fire house, and Lumi turns the stream into a trickle from a faucet to allow you to sip it at your leisure. There are some growing pains to fine tune your interests, but skipping a story is just a swipe away.
Lumi News (Free, iPhone) is a valuable resource to check daily that offers a familiar news style in a nice new package.
