FreeI hope you like challenge and surprises as the new iOS game Portal Rage has both. The goal is to simply move a cube from the left side of the screen to the right side of the screen to reach the portal. To move the cube, you just tap and hold the left side of the screen, and then tap on the right side to jump. There are 50 platformer levels included that introduce falling platforms, spikes, moving obstacles, and more that you can see when the level begins. The twist in Portal Rage is that the levels shift as you play them.
It will be tough to beat any level in Portal Rage in just one try. That’s because, the floor will fall, or spikes will appear as you’re moving along. There are great “gotcha” style elements that you will rarely see coming, and if you try to guess what will appear it will probably lead you into another obstacle. The game can be frustrating depending on your attitude going in, but if you understand the style at the start, you can’t help, but laugh. There are numerous times that a smile will spread on your face as the floor drops out from below the cube, or spikes appear out of nowhere. After the first level, you know something bad will happen, you just don’t know when and where. Each level is about finding the traps, and then reacting properly to circumvent the traps. The game is all about quick action with the entire level on screen, and yet it will take awhile to beat some levels as you experiment in finding all that’s included. The game also has ultra quick restarting so that you’re right back at it, the second you lose.
Portal Rage (Free, Universal) delivers fast paced challenge and surprises that is worth picking up if you want a platformer with more than meets the eye. One minor issue is the ever present ad bar at the bottom of the screen.
