Our App Of The Day section is normally reserved for a high quality trendy new release, but sometimes it’s worth mentioning apps that are a little bit older. Starry Night Interactive originally launched back in 2012 to offer an animated version of Van Gogh’s classic. The reason it’s worth mentioning a two year old app today, is that it’s free for a limited time, and is just as neat today as it was two years ago. There hasn’t been any app to top this offering, and it has withstood the test of time to still be quite a treat to explore on your iOS device.
With Starry Night Interactive, you’re given a moving version of the venerable painting, where the unique brush stroke style actually flows around the screen. You can drag your finger over the painting to move the flowing brush strokes around to create all new patterns. Normally, you’re told not to touch the artwork, but this is the rare case where you’re invited to touch the painting. Not only can you interact with the entire painting at once, but there’s also a 3D zoom feature allowing you to focus on particular sections, while flying through the depth of the painting. It’s quite immersive to see the flowing brush strokes up close, and there’s also a special rainbow color burst mode as you zoom in on the background.
Starry Night Interactive ($1.99 -> Free, Universal) offers stimulating touch interaction, and visual composition that is still a great download today.
