Topps has been making collectible sports cards for decades, and over the past few years have translated those sports into digital cards. Topps Bunt, Kick, and Huddle have built a base, and in March 2015, Topps released the Star Wars Card Trader app. Star Wars had a great 2015 with the release of The Force Awakens, and the app has released hundreds of digital card sets based on the new film as well as the past films. Now, Topps has released The Walking Dead Card Trader to try to connect with one the most popular current TV Shows.
The Walking Dead: Card Trader offers a familiar digital card formula to the other Topps apps, especially Star Wars Card Trader. There are daily releases of new sets that include marathon inserts with weekly new releases for 30 weeks, as well as temporary sets that are released over a couple of weeks. The sets include Chop, Vintage, B&W Portraits, Covalence, Locations, and more. There is a connection to Fear The Walking Dead, but there are no insert sets for the spin-off yet. The imagery connects from season one through season six, and the app emphasizes the TV show, rather than the comic books. You earn daily credits, and you can buy more credits through in-app purchases, or earn credits by completing offers with TapJoy. The app is starting off with card counts and odds at relatively higher rates to be on pace to the current level of the highly used Star Wars Card Trader, rather than starting out smaller with a new download base. Walking Dead fans will find a lot to like, and card collecting fans will have multiple interesting choices, even if they’re not the biggest Walking Dead fans.
The Walking Dead Card Trader (Free, Universal) offers a new theme for Topps digital card collecting style, and it’s worth checking out.
