The Yahoo Weather app took the App Store by storm back in April as it offered a brilliant minimalistic design that combined beautiful photography with detailed weather statistics. It seems Apple’s new iOS 7 weather app took a lot of cues from Yahoo’s ornate visual design. The app has been iPhone only most of the year, but here just before the iTunes Connect freeze for 2013, Yahoo has updated Yahoo Weather to be a universal app with an iPad version for the first time. The iPad version isn’t all that different, and maintains the same great style, just on a bigger canvas.
The photography to depict each city looks even grander on the iPad screen, and that’s just the beginning of the app. The main screen has the basic weather details at the bottom, but a simple swipe up brings up the weather details page. You’re then given a translucent overlay over the background photo to present the current conditions, a 24 hour line chart forecast, a ten day forecast, descriptive details of the conditions, wind/sunrise/sunset/moon phase chart, and interactive radar map. The app delicately balances the ability to offer a quick glance weather forecast, and more in-depth weather information, all in one seamless design. The photography is always present, and ties into location, time, and current conditions to provide a photo that fits. You can also swipe horizontally to move though the different cities you add to the app.
Yahoo Weather (Free, Universal) is the only iOS weather app you need, that has shined throughout 2013.
