It looks like Apple is expecting its iPhone 6 to be a popular model. Because according to a recent report out of Taiwan, Cupertino has placed orders for an “unprecedented” number of iPhone 6 units, with the first batch of devices said to consist of 68 million handsets.
The news comes from Taiwan’s Business Weekly (via GforGames), which adds that the iPhone 6 will reportedly enter mass production this month, in July. It should be noted, however, that the publication doesn’t highlight whether the 68 million units ordered by Apple consist of 4.7-inch handsets, 5.5-inch models, or a mixture of each.
Both Foxconn and Pegatron, Apple’s manufacturers for the iPhone 6, were notified of the situation in the second week of June, the report adds. To put the 68 million figure into perspective, this is twice the size of the first batch of iPhone 5 handsets, which were ordered back in 2012.
