Apple has been making iPhone cases for years, but one type they have stayed away from has been the battery back-up case. There are many third party battery back-up cases, but it has seemed Apple hasn’t made a battery back-up case as that would admit the iPhone battery isn’t sufficient. No matter the reason, Apple has officially released their first iPhone battery back-up case that comes in charcoal or white, and retails for $99. The case adopts the silicone iPhone 6/6S style, with a distinct bump on the back, where the battery resides.
The iPhone 6s Smart Battery Case has a relatively unique design as it slaps a battery on the existing iPhone silicone case, and coats a silicone layer over it. The design is odd, but has a relatively snug fit in the hand as the battery bump sits in your palm, and the top and bottom of the iPhone are still in the normal position in your hand. The Smart Battery Case shows battery status on the iPhone lock screen as well as in Notification Center. Apple claims the battery offers increased talk time of up to 25 hours, internet use on LTE of up to 18 hours, and even longer audio and video playback. The battery is 1,877 mAh to offer a comparable number to the other battery back-up cases out there.
The iPhone 6s Smart Battery Case is available in white and black for $99 for pick-up in store today, or 1-3 day shipping times. Apple isn’t offering a battery back-up case for the 6s Plus, though the 6S case likely fits last year’s iPhone 6 as well.
