A number of apps drop from paid to free on a daily basis*, and we pick the top four everyday, as many of the others aren’t worth your time even for free. The Hobbit: Official Visual Companion ($4.99 -> Free, Universal) [Review]: A companion iOS app to go along with the film that delivers an interactive 3D version of the map of Middle Earth allowing you to pan the screen to explore each region. There are tokens to depict each item on the map, and that includes 75 different characters, locations, objects, and races to discover. Each token leads to an article about the character, location, object, or race, and there are also embedded movie stills.
Background Eraser ($0.99 -> Free, iPhone): A powerful photo editing utility that provides the Photoshop style function of erasing the background. The app lets you target a main object to intelligently remove the background, and also includes manual erase, as well as reverse erase to remove the main object from the background.
Videon ($2.99 -> Free, Universal): A deluxe video camera app that includes numerous features including realtime zoom, adjustable frame rate, smooth interface, video stabilization, different resolutions, auto and manual exposure & focus, and more. After capturing, there are a number of editing effects including color changes, speed effects, trim/split/merge abilities, and there’s also a handy gallery mode.
iSmoothRun ($4.99 -> Free, iPhone): The app is a training aid for running as well as other exercises, that tracks your every movement with the GPS and accelerometer. The app can track time, distance, location, pace, altitude, and running cadence to keep a log of all of your statistics. You can improve your running style, and get voice and visual feedback based on tracked data.
