Last month Asus announced that it would soon be releasing a redesigned FonePad 7 (FE170CG) tablet that would be using the new ASUS ZenUI interface. This new tablet comes with a 7-inch display and can be used like a phone to make and send calls or text messages. This model is now being detailed further by the company’s website and has been on sale in Thailand for the past few days now.
The Asus FonePad 7 (FE170CG) is marketed as a budget device thus it’s no wonder that it comes with a weaker processor and a lower screen resolution when compared to last year’s FonePad 7 model.
This model uses a 1.2 GHz Intel Atom Z2520 Clover Trail+ processor which was launched by Intel last year. This chip is designed to provide great performance while consuming little power. It comes with two cores that each uses Hyper-Threading technology which allows for faster web browsing and smoother HD video playbacks.
The 7-inch display of this device now comes with a lower resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels compared to the 800 x 1280 pixels that last year’s model was using.
One of the features that weren’t mentioned by the company previously is that this model will also be coming with a dual SIM variant. This allows consumers to insert two SIM cards on the device allowing them to connect to two mobile networks at the same time. This makes it easier to separate business and personal contacts or can be used simply to take advantage of the promos of two carriers at the same time. The single SIM variant of this device will only be available in white color while the dual SIM variant comes in black, white, red, and blue.
In terms of specifications there’s really nothing to be excited about this tablet. One thing that it excels at is its battery life which can reportedly last up to 10 hours on a single charge. This makes it a perfect travel companion as it doesn’t need to be charged constantly.
Consumers looking for a tablet that’s priced affordable and can make calls and send text messages should consider getting the Asus FonePad 7 (FE170CG). There’s still no information as to when the global rollout of this device will start however over at Thailand it is already available for 4190 Thai Baht or roughly US$130.
