It was a long time coming, but AT&T finally revealed pricing and availability for the Asus PadFone X. The phone/tablet hybrid was first announced back in January, and seemed to reside in gadget purgatory. But those of you lonely hearts out there can now pre-order one of the more unique devices available. That is if you can justify purchasing one over a Galaxy S5, HTC On (M8) and LG G3.
What makes the PadFone X unique is that while it’s a smartphone, it can dock into a tablet-like accessory, essentially giving you a bigger canvas to get work done. Many smartphone owners probably own a tablet anyway, so Asus is providing both experiences in one. When the concept was first introduced, it was a pretty great idea that showed Asus was capable of thinking outside of the box. But it never really caught on—and it’s hard to see the PadFone X becoming much of a hit.
The PadFone X sports a 5-inch Full HD display, Android 4.4 KitKat, 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 16GB of internal storage (microSD expandable), 2330mAh battery and a 13-megapixel camera. Some pretty respectable specs, but not enough to really differentiate from some of the other more popular flagships currently available, even with the ability to dock with a 9-inch tablet shell. The shell itself sports a 1920×1200 display and 4990mAh battery.
If you’re really set on picking up the PadFone X when it’s available for pre-order on June 6, you can pick it up for $199.99 with a two-year contract. Meanwhile, you can also pick it up with AT&T’s Next 18 plan for $22.92 per month, or AT&T Next 12 for $29.80 per month.
