Earlier this year at CES 2014, Asus announced its plans to bring the PadFone to America with a little help from AT&T. Since then we haven’t heard much about when the smartphone-tablet hybrid will arrive in the U.S. or how much it will cost, but today AT&T grabbed our attention with a tweet teasing the upcoming launch.
AT&T doesn’t reveal anything new, simply showing a photo of the PadFone X in use and reminding us that it consists of a 5-inch handset which slides into a 9-inch slate to activate the larger screen. Meanwhile, AT&T’s website doesn’t offer any additional information, simply promising that the 2-in-1 device is “coming soon.” You can also sign-up for email updates on new Asus products from the carrier if you want to be the first to know when the news breaks.
The PadFone X features a 5-inch smartphone with full HD display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and runs Android 4.4 KitKat. Of course, you’ll also get a 9-inch full HD tablet display. That’s two devices for the price of one, but whether the PadFone X will succeed in the U.S. is unclear. Asus still doesn’t have a huge brand presence outside of Asia, despite finding some success designing Google’s Nexus 7 tablets. Hopefully the company is planning a strong marketing push to help boost sales.
