If your not familiar with Ballistic brand cases yet, I’ll tell you these are some very durable high quality cases. Many iPhone users swear by their Ballistic babies. After handling quite a few on the other platform I thought it was necessary we took the Ballistic Shell Gel [SG] Series Case for a spin too!
The Shell Gel [SG] Series Cases are available in 3 luscious colors. Gray, Red & Black. This brand of cases is compatible with most all BlackBerry series smartphones, but we took the BlackBerry Bold 9900-9930 version for a spin first.
° Advanced three layers of protection ° Layer 1 – Soft silicone equipped with Ballistic Corners™ ° Layer 2 – Tough impact resistant polycarbonate shell ° Layer 3 – Ballistic shock absorbent polymer ° Pocket-able protection ° Equipped with a lay-on-table-feature
Day 1. Unboxing – This is one of my favorite moments in receiving a new product. I’ve groped a few iPhones wrapped in these bad-boys before but I’ve never had my own Ballistic product. The packaging, artwork and comic book-like description on the box is visually appealing! Very original. The package opens up like a book. Inside I found the Shell Gel Case [2 pieces] with another plastic insert to keep the integrity of the case filled out. Once removed I reached for my BlackBerry Bold.
Installation & Removal – Now I’ve got the case out. 2 pieces that fit one into the other. Bold in hand I reach for the 1st layer [Layer 1 - Soft silicone equipped w/ Ballistic Corners™]. It’s an easy slip right into the “soft silicone” piece. Designed with special Ballistic Corners™ to better cushion an impact in case of accidental slips, drops or spills. These 4 corners are also structured out towards the user so your Bold screen never touches a surface. And I like that! Next piece consists of the 2nd & 3rd layers [L2 - Tough impact resistant polycarbonate shell + L3 - Ballistic shock absorbent polymer]. This piece connects over the right side first by puzzling in the volume, mute & convenience buttons first. Lock those into place and the left side glides right in! A little adjusting of the soft silicone around the homescreen and your set.
Surprisingly the removal process is not as big a deal as it can be with many other cases we’ve reviewed in the past. To remove the Impact resistant polycarbonate shell – I simply grip the case in one hand applying a bit of pressure to the soft silicone trim around the screen, and with a my other hand I gently remove the shell off the soft silicone. Bold comes right out of the 1st layer with no effort. I’ve followed out this process about 100 times over the last 2 weeks so I can change out batteries in my device. So far I can’t see any stretch-damage from the reoccurring process. There’s a big gold star next to the Ballistic SG now, if you’re asking me. Keep in mind Ballistic has instructions built into the case for the process that the case was designed to go through. Both theirs and my own work, I just prefer my method a bit more because the area I’m placing wear on is a bit more hidden and meets my needs more.
Day 2-7: Life w/ Ballistic SG – I was instantly magnetized to this design. And if my past luck with cases would predict a future with this one, my chances of finding a lifetime mate here would probably begin to diminish quite rapidly. Usually soon after the honeymoon phase. Although contrary to popular belief [usually my own], I was actually falling more for this case after the new feeling calmed into a steady current. These are high quality cases. That’s just the facts. And what’s better, is the details. This case is very lightweight. Slips into my pocket, with a little bulge but nothing like some of the other heavy duty protective cases out there. The ports, speaker, mic, NFC and buttons are all equally made accessible.
Protection – Drops and dings have a way of making my stomach jump up into my throat. It doesn’t matter if I have a case on or not. But since I’ve been using the SG I haven’t had a lot of drops. I had to do a few on purpose just to make sure this one stands the test. Depending on how high I dropped from, the case does fall fast and it hits the ground with a loud “BANG!” Followed by an echo as it takes a fair bounce. But the BlackBerry is perfectly intact, minus some light dust and lint from the impact. I didn’t have the gusto to take it to the streets but I can’t imagine much difference from my hardwood floors. Though I’ll save that for the clumsy version of me, not the blogger.
Verdict – My first experience with a Ballistic Case has been nothing short of amazing. The Ballistic Shell Gel [SG] Series Case ranks high for protection. It’s highly accessible. Slips into front & back pockets nicely. The area’s where the soft silicone is visible are the only areas that attract anything. And that’s a light dust from everyday use. A quick swipe of a lint free cloth will handle that. The poly-carb shell is awesome. It takes a very greasy finger to show anything on there. Though it leaves barely any residue. After 2 weeks I have no visible scratches, no dents, no stretched out silicone or discoloration. I love this case and highly recommend it. Pick one up for $34.99 in Gray/Black [reviewed], Red/Black or Black/Black below!
