Okay now we’ve just about seen every type of case there is for the BlackBerry PlayBook. And one thing that seems almost unanimous is the need for some protection when it comes to your PlayBook. While I like having the ultimate protection, I do prefer to have something minimal while at home or in a sitting position.
In all fairness this is my second Barely There Case for the PlayBook. When I got the first PlayBook on launch day I had already been looking forward to the case, so I did get one reserved back then. We’ll get into what happened there shortly.
Packaging – with all Case-mate products is always attractive. The case like most from them comes in a nice thinly made plastic pack. You can recycle it or keep it for storage which is nice if you have a lot of accessories.
Design – Now the case itself is very thin, the way it’s meant to be like their other Barely There cases. This case is not designed to save your PlayBook from a fall. However it does protect the entire back, top, bottom & 4 corners from light dings and scratches. The idea behind this “brand” has always been to add a bit of sexy to your mobile device. And I think it does quite a good job doing so. It’s very form fit to the PlayBook form factor.
Use – For me I see this case as a perfect layer of protection while I’m sitting around the house in comfort. As much as I do love my PlayBook bare, I really prefer to have some sort of protection and this works well. I like the way the flexible plastic feels as opposed to the actual feel of the PlayBook. This is also much easier on my obsessiveness because it eliminates another area of the PlayBook that commonly steals my fingerprints.
Downfalls – One, well two – The areas the connect the case across the top buttons and bottom ports are extremely thin slivers of plastic. They break easily. Fortunately you can snap these off once they begin to wear and you will not even know they were there to begin with. I think Case-mate needs to think about removing them from a design standpoint. Unless they can strengthen the pencil-lead thin pieces somehow.
Community buzz – The only other complaint I’ve heard anyone else say about this case is the bare sides of the PlayBook. But I do have my own argument. The Barely There is designed to be just that. “Barely There.” And from the first case to this second one, I didn’t at any point feel that those sides needed that extra protection. Top, bottom and 4 corners covered = the brand name. Every other user that’s picked this case up has had nothing but compliments from what they’re telling me.
Cleaning & care – Actually the thin flex plastic fairs very well to lint, dust and hair. No lint or hair issues whatsoever. A little dust and light greasy prints rub off easily with a quick swipe across the pants. Though you should probably use a lint-free cloth. I can’t even count how many Case-mate products I’ve owned, but one they’ve mostly shared is a nice clean case all the time. No exceptions here.
Price & options – The Barely There for BlackBerry PlayBook is now priced at just $20.00. A pretty good price for a simple casing and sexy look to an already great looking tablet. This case is made in 2 colors: Pearl & Black. Check it out below!
