This last Saturday, at 9:29AM, I got an exciting text from a number I don’t know, informing me that “President Trump new Education Money program is applicable.” A week before it was “We desire to get you into reliable auto.” And if I had any doubts about the authenticity of those texts and what they promised, the senders also followed it up with phone calls on a daily basis. It’s reached the point that if I don’t recognize the number, I simply hang up on them.
These texts and phone calls can persist for months. They are made with minimal effort on the part of the sender, as they can be pre-recorded and autodialed. Most of the top five phone service providers can provide resources to manage unwanted calls and texts, but we’ll give you several options here in the form of apps. All non-emergency robocalls require your permission to be made to your wireless phone, and telemarketing calls may be prevented by joining the Do Not Call Registry.
1. Safest Call Blocker (Free)
You can upgrade to a paid version of this app with no ads. The app makes it simple to add numbers you want to block, or to add the number from the last call you received. What’s unfortunate about my situation is that the caller uses many different numbers from various locations, and this app doesn’t seem to have a way to prevent those calls. Safest Call Blocker is great, however, if you are looking to block a specific number; and it gives you the satisfaction of pressing a button to never hear from the caller again.

2. Mr. Number-Block Calls & Spam (Free)
Mr. Number is capable of blocking spam SMS without you needing to provide the number it’s coming from, so this was more up my alley. The app features a database of common spam sources. It allows you to look up unknown phone numbers to determine if it’s someone you know, or whether you want to reject the call—but only 20 of these are free. You can also block calls based on area code, by person, or when the number is private or unknown.

3. Caller ID, Block Calls and Texts (Free)
There are no ads to deal with, and caller lookups are unlimited, making it one of the best Android call/text blockers. It can block SMS, but you do have to let it be the default messaging app—although that’s not unusual. However, only if you have Kit Kat or lower can you send blocked calls to voicemail automatically. The app does keep tabs on numbers that have been blacklisted before, and comes pre-loaded with such numbers.
If you want your Blacklist or Whitelist to remain private, Caller ID, Block Calls & Texts does offer password protection.

4. Call Blocker Free-Blacklist (Free)
Effective and lightweight, Call Blocker offers plenty of ways to block those annoying calls and texts. You can choose from four blocking modes: Accept All, Accept Only from Whitelist, Block All from Blacklist, or Accept Only from Whitelist & Contacts. Call Blocker Free-Blacklist lets you know when it’s doing its job and blocking calls by sending you a notification each time. It’s about time you enjoyed some peace.

5. Call & SMS Easy Blocker (Free)
Some advantages to this app are that blacklisted numbers are blocked inconspicuously, the app itself is relatively lightweight, and a record is kept of all blocked numbers and texts. One downside is that SMS blocking will not work on 4.4. You can block unknown and private numbers. Send those callers to the Blacklist.

6. Truecaller-Caller ID & Dialer (Free)
If you are looking for a popular app with over 200 million users, this is it. Truecaller has put its hoard of users to use, reporting spam numbers. The interface is attractive; the app intuitive. You are required to register your phone number if you want to use the lookup option. It’s because of the crowdsourcing of spam numbers that this app has been one of the best Android call/text blockers to me personally—it has identified nearly all of them.

7. Calls Blacklist-Call Blocker (Free)
This well-liked app offers some unique features, such as an option to block ranges of numbers according to their prefix, or to block SMS coming from alphanumeric numbers. Calls Blacklist manages to be lightweight, but still somehow offers an array of call-blocking functions. There are simple toggling options to turn the Blacklist on or off, and you can also schedule certain timeframes when you don’t wish to receive those calls or messages. Add the numbers of important contacts to the Whitelist so that they will never be blocked.

8. Call Blocker (Free)
Call Blocker offers many choices as to how you want to handle your unwanted calls. Many users have complained that they don’t want calls to automatically go to voicemail, but would rather have an option to pick up or hang up, and this app lets you do whatever you choose. It also includes password protection and backup to save profile logs and contacts. Call Blocker may not work well in Marshmallow or Nougat, and support is limited for 4.0 and up.

9. Call Control-Call Blocker (Free)
Another popular app, with over 1 billion calls blocked, is Call Control-Call Blocker. Call Control-Call Blocker automatically blocks calls from violators of the FTC/FCC Do Not Call List, and additionally, receives reports of spam numbers from its over 12 million users. The Call Control LLC support team also seems responsive to any complaints about the app, which is a big reason that this is one of the best Android call/text blockers. Call Control-Call Blocker also takes care to respect your privacy by keeping a separate log of blocked calls, independent of your regular call logs.

10. Blacklist Plus-Call Blocker (Free)
Blacklist Plus is very user-friendly, and affords several blocking options, such as muting callers so you don’t have to hear the incessant ringing. If you are looking for an app that is both simple and effective, this is it. The paid version offers more privacy features. You can hide the status icon in either version. It also works to filter spam messages.

As previously mentioned, call-blocking options are also available with many carriers, but not all are free. For instance, Verizon allows you to block up to five numbers for free for 90 days, but for more blocking options there’s a monthly fee. T-Mobile can block up to 10 numbers free of charge, but you have to have a family plan. Certain phones and newer operating systems come with some built-in blocking options. We hope we helped you undermine those unwanted calls and messages.
