When I was a child, way back in the annals of time when the world was sepia and Dinosaucers roamed the Earth, my favourite toy was that other great, less-pig-flavoured, Danish export that is LEGO. A plaything as perfect today as it was then, for me I loved being capable of being able to build it into anything I wanted, use and reuse it without restriction, and have the only limitation on what it can do be my own imagination; little wonder then that I ‘grew up’ to become such a fan of the analogous open source OS that is Android.
So, tenuous intro link aside, imagine for one second what would happen if there was some kind of amazing Lego-Android hybrid… Now stop imagining and behold: LEGO Mindstorms EV3!
Launched at the CES tech-fest over in Las Vegas, the new connecting kit comes with an Intelligent Brick heart that, no longer pinned to the PC platform, comes with full Android compatibility out of the box, allowing for far greater flexibility, a higher degree of hackability and, consequently, more opportunity to make it perform to your ability. I think we all agree immediately that this is the stuff of genius.
Coming accordingly complete with a USB port and SD card slot, plus an infrared sensor to help you control your creations, the new Mindstorms set is slated to go on sale in the second half of 2013 for US $349 USD. It’s almost like they can see inside my head…
