ChuChu Rocket! is a hangover from the days of Dreamcast when Sega was still a huge player in the videogames industry and regularly churned out its fair share of classics.
A puzzle game of cat and mouse proportions, players are tasked with steering several space rodents away from their feline foes and into the safe haven of their rocket ships. Fiendishly difficult and suitable for quick play whenever you’ve got a spare second, this is a great port for Android smartphones.
We’ve been on a bit of a puzzle binge recently at Life Of Android and found that competition is rife in this particular gaming apps category.
Reflexions, Where’s My Water and Greedy Spiders have all come up trumps during testing in in the past fortnight, so this leaves ChuChu Rocket! with a little work to do to climb to the top of the smartphone pack.
As a 12-year-old port of a formerly free launch title, CCR’s graphics aren’t what you’d describe as spectacular but they do the job considering the game itself has to regularly account for 100+ mice charging about your touchscreen at the same.
Additionally, the app contains no online play which is a real shame given its original purpose was to show off the Dreamcast’s Internet capabilities.
On the pure puzzler front however, ChuChu Rocket! is almost untouchable. Featuring a pleasing array of modes including Puzzle, Challenge and Battle you’ll be rescuing mice til the cows come home if Sega have their way. Aided by an idiot proof control system, swipe down on a grid’s square to guide the mice in that direction, the Sonic-creators have made the often tricky smartphone transition with triumphant aplomb.
Each challenge you’re set is pleasing bite-sized, meaning CCR is ideal for short bursts of gaming which can quite quickly unravel into long stints in front of your Android. Although the game’s ultimate goal never really changes, each puzzle itself generally has a fresh twist on the classic formula and with 500 levels to play through, that’s plenty to be getting on with.
Despite its age, CCR remains a remarkably good game and one of the finest puzzlers available for Google-powered smartphones. Whether nostalgia fiends and fresh converts will find plenty to love here.
The Bottom Line
A quality port of a classic Dreamcast puzzler.
