It’s not usually a good thing to keep going in circles, but the new iOS game Circa Infinity is out to say otherwise. It’s a circular platformer that is all about revolving around circles to dive deeper and deeper to inner circles. Each circle is littered with monsters to avoid, leap over, or duck under on your way to complete the 50 included levels. You simply tap the left and right side of the screen to rotate around the circle in that direction, and there’s a single action button to jump or duck depending on where you are.
Each of the 50 levels presents a series of circles with each one featuring a triangular wedge you need to reach to duck down to a deeper circle. You need to dive down into one circle, and then jump up to a small rotating circle, and keep alternating between the two functions to reach the inner ending of the given level. The game presents an alternating black and white color scheme accented with red monsters to avoid. Circa Infinity has a clear goal and smooth controls allowing for the pure challenge of the gameplay to shine through. Thus game is on the difficult side, but thankfully if you make a mistake, you’re just sent one circular level outwards, rather than restarting the whole level.
Circa Infinity starts tough, and there’s a nice ramp up of even more difficult challenges based on new enemies introduced with new tactics. There are enemies that jump, fly, and move between the outer and inner circle, and soon the enemies will overlap with bigger enemies that impact you on multiple circles. As you dive deeper into the Circa Infinity challenge, you will need to have quicker reactions to duck, leap, and dive down into each deeper circle. It takes a bit to get used to the rotation movements, but once you do, it all comes down to facing the challenging level design. There are five boss battles mixed into the 50 level single player campaign. Each level offers a relatively fresh challenge with usually one new elements to contend with each time. There’s still some overlap in how you dodge enemies, and move from circle to circle, and that’s simply part of the game.
Circa Infinity ($2.99, Universal) delivers a fine tuned challenge that is well worth picking up on iOS.
