In early December a huge update is coming to Clash of Clans, one of the most popular mobile games on the planet, that looks to deliver several game-changing new features. Today the first sneak peek was released, revealing some major changes to shields, which will make post players redesign their base layout and more.
At a developer event back in late October Supercell, the developers behind the hit mobile game, revealed a few small aspects of the update and teased that much more was coming soon. Then last week we learned that starting today, November 23rd, will be teasers sharing small bits of this massive update each day for two weeks.
Over the course of the next two weeks we’ll slowly see the “bigger picture” for the December Clash of Clans update, but today all we know is that some major changes are coming to Shields. More importantly, your Town Hall being destroyed will no longer give you a Shield. That isn’t all though, so read on for more details.
In October Supercell confirmed that this will be one of the biggest updates in this history of the game. Everything from how we attack, defend our village, new troops, bigger map sizes for more building and more. There is a lot coming, and we’ll learn a little more each day for the next 2-3 weeks.
The December Clash of Clans update will finally bring Town Hall level 11, allowing those who’ve nearly finished the game more to look forward to. Along with it will be a third hero, a new Eagle defensive building to defend our bases, bigger map size, and a few other things. That’s all the company announced in October, but today and all week we’re going to learn a lot more.
Today we’re learning about new changes to the shields. Then next will be personal breaks and session timers, then multiplayer matchmaking and league bonuses, or loot, then more sneak peeks, TH11, the new hero, and more. All of this will end on December 7th, which is when we’re hearing the update will be released.
That said, here’s what we learned today. Shields are about to get a major major overhaul. To put it bluntly, Town Hall sniping will no longer work, and leaving your town hall outside of the base will be pointless. As it will no longer give players a Shield once they’ve been attacked. Don’t worry though, there’s a good reason for it.
At first this may sound like an awful change, as it’s a huge portion of the game right now, but this is only one small piece of the puzzle. Again, we need to stay tuned for more details to truly understand the “big picture” for this massive game-changing update. We’re also not sure how this will effect farming, but surely that will be addressed with the loot bonuses, stars for still taking down a Town Hall, etc. But we don’t know everything yet.
Currently when an attacker takes down a players Town Hall, that player instantly get a shield and can’t be attacked again, the shield is longer after 50% of the base is destroyed, or longer if someone gets 100% of a base. Meaning once you’ve been attacked, there’s a period where no one else can hit you. After the December update, this will be completely different.

Attacking while shielded no longer breaks the entire shield, but instead costs a bit of shield time
Above are the two most important parts of this news. You won’t get a shield when a TH is destroyed, but at the same time, users won’t lose their shield for attacking. Instead, you can hit next, next, next to find the perfect base, but once you attack, you lose three hours of your Shield, not the entire thing.
With this update users can attack 2-3 times without ever losing their Shield. At the same time, they can be attacked multiple times (with the Town Hall destroyed) and get no Shield whatsoever. Here’s how it will work.
12-hour Shield granted after 30% destruction
14-hour Shield granted after 60% destruction
16-hour Shield granted after 90% destruction
Town Hall destruction does not automatically grant a Shield
Attacker must deploy at least 50% of their troops, or else you won’t get a Shield
What this means is an attacker must use over 50% of their army troops (including Clan Castle and Heros) and get 30% destruction before anyone will get a Shield. As a result, more bases will be available to attack, which will give players a better ecosystem and more loot available to steal while attacking.
Users can still leave a Town Hall outside, and tons of small buildings that aren’t important, in order to let an attacker get 30% so they get a Shield, but don’t make it too easy. The attacker needs to use at least 50% of their army, or else you’ll simply lose trophies and money, and still have no Shield. There’s a fine balance gamers will need to figure out.
Then as we mentioned above, if a player is attacked and gets a Shield, they can still attack others without losing their Shield. Hitting next will still cost money (based on Town Hall) but once you actually execute an attack, players will lose 3-hours of their personal shield. Weird, right?
Over the course of the next few days this will all make more sense. There is a new village guard concept Supercell will announce, along with a re-balanced loot system for how much money can be earned while attacking, among other things.
For now it seems a bit silly, and may be confusing or convoluted, but we need to stay tuned for more details to fully understand it. In the end, this will mean more bases are available to attack, giving us more reasons to play and steal gold or elixir, and we can attack without losing our shields too. This will benefit everyone in the long run, once we fully understand how it all works.
