The most comprehensive comic store and reader on the market, with over 14,000 titles from over 30 publishers, including Marvel and DC, who also use the Comixology tech for their separate apps.
Thanks to improving screen quality and nippy processors, reading comics on the go can now be a great use for your smartphone – port it over to your tablet and you’re talking a whole new world of wonder.
Comixology has a rich history of creating and retailing digital versions of comics, and it shows in this app. We used it to load up on The Walking Dead and found that from the off it was blissfully easy to browse though different titles, series and publishing houses.
Once you’ve chosen your tome, the silky navigation continues – the app’s patented Guided View tech means that it mimics the eye’s natural progression, moving the page accordingly and guiding you from panel to panel as you’d read a comic in real life.
Elsewhere, simple intuitive taps and pinches will turn pages and zoom, while a beautiful touch is that background colour will change from dark to light according to the panel being displayed, so that a massive comic session won’t give you eye-strain.
It would be nice to be able to buy an entire series of comics and batch download and the issues do take up a lot of space (about 20MB each), so make sure you’ve got plenty of room on your SD card.
The bottom line
A beautifully realised reader that should be in any comic-fan’s arsenal.
