Just a few days back we saw the nightly CM9 builds come available for the HP TouchPad. Not to mention we had seen a few pre-Alpha releases in the past few months. And well, it looks like the first Alpha release is ready. The CyanogenMod 9 Alpha 1 release is available for download. This build is based on Android 4.0.3 and uses kernel version 2.6.35. Some of the improvements that come along with this Alpha 1 release (over the Alpha 0.6 release) include the following;
Hardware video decoding support. As a result, Youtube HD and 720p and 1080p local media will now be playable. Netflix does not work yet.
Includes touchscreen improvements by Dees_Troy.
Now able to enable use of 2D companion core to offload composition.
And just to drive one point home for those who may have somehow missed it — Netflix does not yet work. Me personally, that rules this build out because Netflix is probably the most used app on my TouchPad (thanks to my youngest who prefers to sit with a tablet as opposed to a regular television).
Anyway, while this release is nice to see — the golden rule still applies here — this is an early release and if you choose to run it, you will likely have some issues. And what that really means is if you choose to install this and have issues, you cannot blame anyone but yourself.
