The Dandy, like no other comic of its inked ilk, showed generations of children what a man could achieve after eating a cow-pie and how a fancy looking fruit could transform a boy into a veritable chap of steel. Now only available online, have Korky the Cat and co made a comfortable transition from page to Play? Read on…
Launch in December 1937 and folded as a tree-bothering paper-based publication in December of last year, The Dandy for me always played second fiddle to The Beano, but then, like the Beatles vs The Rolling Stones, Oasis vs Blur, erm, Kramer vs Kramer, everyone was either one or the other as kids. But that’s not to say I didn’t have the utmost respect for the creatively cartooned comic capers crammed within its wood-pulp walls.
Take the characters, for example: Desperate Dan, Korky the Cat, Beryl the Peril, Bananaman (a migrant from the merged Nutty comic) and an epic array of others who, I now must admit, are ringing literally no bells whatsoever. Invisible Dick? The Boy with the Iron Hands? What? But, you know, there were classic characters aplenty!
Now reimagined as an app set within the house of Dandy, kids are encouraged to create an avatar, dress it accordingly, play games, make sounds (leaning to the juvenile side of things, as you’d imagine) and, of course buy the digital edition of the latest issue. Ample enough entertainment, you’d imagine, for an app whose raison d’être is basically to make you buy a comic book. But…
THE BOTTOM LINE
Sadly, it just doesn’t quite work; and going by the User Reviews, for countless devices it doesn’t work full stop. A good idea in theory that is brimming with an eight year old’s approximation of excellent online entertainment, the app is unfortunately also packed with glitches and so unresponsive that it would undoubtedly lead that eight year to increasingly aggressive screen prodding in a state of desperation equalling that of Dan himself; a genuine disappointment that the devs need to right if they’re to do proper justice to, what was, a comic book institution.
