Hey, here’s one of our indie favorites which popped up at PlayStation Experience over the weekend. Darkest Dungeon had a strong showing from the convention with a brand new trailer and new information to show off its horrific premise, and developer Red Hook Studios also had the chance show off the unexpected PlayStation 4 and PS Vita versions for the first time.
For those who haven’t heard of it yet, Darkest Dungeon is a dungeon-crawling RPG with themes of the inner workings of the human mind at the core of its design. Sure, monsters can probably kill your party as they search an ancient mansion for treasure and secrets, but your main enemy will always be the quirks of your allies. Will one stab your other party members in the back to make a quick getaway? Will one snap and aim a fireball at anything that moves? Will one succumb to a childhood trauma of spiders and crumble in battle?
You never know what part of a character’s locked psyche is going to erupt at the wrong time while exploring these dungeons, and you never know what new mental scars these characters are going to suffer.
Darkest Dungeon was an instant Kickstarter success earlier in March, securing its $75,000 goal in a single day before eventually pulling in $313,337 total. It seems that Red Hook Studios secured the attention of Sony’s Third Party Production in the meantime, which means my dream of playing this game on the Vita will come true! It looks like one of those portable RPGs that’s great both on the go and with a pair of headphones, alone, in the dark, and late at night.
PlayStation Blog has a decent write up of its quirky and kind of genius battle system, but I would prefer it if you read our own, ahem, excellent interview with Red Hook Studios. Granted, a lot has probably changed with the game over the last few months, but the layout still looks really awesome!
Congratulations to Red Hook Studios for gaining Sony’s support, and I still can’t wait to play the game. Darkest Dungeon will be released for the PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and PC in 2015.
