Yesterday was Alfred E. Neuman’s 56th birthday. The old man is still making fun of our most and least favorite pop culture icons and to celebrate his special day, DC Entertainment launched MAD Magazine (Cheap!) for the iPad.
This may be the biggest April Fool’s joke ever to be played on the iPad. Your Apple tablet will never be the same again.
The app is a basic magazine subscription app. It is free to download but not free to read.
Individual back-issues cost $1.99. Currently, issues date back to #507. Upcoming issues of MAD Magazine will be $4.99 each, $1.99 as a bi-monthly subscription or $9.99 for auto-renewal yearly subscriptions.
Back-issues of the magazine are simple PDF transfers of the paper issues, however new issues, starting with April’s release, include animated covers, interactive “fold-in” pages and pop-ups of Sergio Aragones’ MAD Marginals.
Additionally, the company plans to add other interactive materials to entertain readers. The April issue includes “MAD’s Make Your Own Twilight Movie” feature, which allows users to “create multiple storylines and highlight their choices as they make them for a ridiculous visual punch line.”
Included free (Cheap!) with the app is access to TV Time-Outs, the Idoitical Blog, the MAD Magazine online store and exclusive features. There is also a preview download that includes the Table of Contents (boring), The Hunger Games Outtakes (hilarious) and an episode of Love Is… featuring CBS’s Mike & Molly (jiggly). Current print subscribers can also subscribe to the digital versions for free by entering their account information.
It looks like Alfred E. Neuman will be having plenty of laughs at other’s expense with this hilarious new app. “We’re delighted to bring MAD to the iPad,” said MAD Editor John Ficarra. “We think the MAD app may be just the thing to turn the struggling iPad around and make it successful –though most experts think it may be just the thing that kills it altogether.”
