What better way to liven up a miserable Monday than with a brutal combat racer mixing guns and gore in utter car-nage? From the splendidly violent people that brought you Max Payne, Remedy Entertainment, comes the perfect cure to the common commute: Death Rally…
Do the things that the traffic laws and common decency frown on in real life on your phone – pick your car, arm it to the hilt and then hit the track in a blur of burning rubber and burning opponents as you use your multitouch screen to guide your death-mobile around the varying tracks, obliterating anyone who gets in your way in a dirty ballet of metallic carmageddon.
Free to play, in-app purchases allow you to upgrade your car and weaponise it until it’s the best possible killing machine it can be in preparation for the gruellingly destructive races to come. And arm it well, because your Stig-like driving skills might be of no use…
THE BOTTOM LINE
Graphics are great, options are extensive and gameplay is smooth and quick. However, the steering is atrocious and in a game where steering is somewhat key to the whole process of playing, that’s quite the obstacle. But it’s more annoying than insurmountable, and once you manage to adapt you’ll enjoy many happy hours of ‘driving’, shooting and generally sending all around you to a fresh fiery hell.
As a standalone Death Rally is simplistic, unapologetically violent fun, but when Remedy fix the steering and deliver an online multiplayer version, this game will be catapulted into the chart hit stratosphere, so get practicing now.
