Keeping track of the App Store requires a whole lot of work, and even then you can miss some compelling new releases. The Descent launched back in February, but just caught our notice this weekend with a temporary free sale. The game offers a mysterious storyline revolving around the “Book of the Dead”. You play as a former archeologist in search of his daughter who has gone missing in South America in pursuit of the ancient evil book. You’re presented with an intense adventure experience where you come face to face with a wide assortment of demons as you travel through caves, jungle, desert, and even the afterworld.
The core concept provides a first person shooter style mixed with a pure adventure set-up where you will need to explore to advance. The game offers very little guidance, and instead you just have to make your way forward, whether it’s clearing the path, finding a helpful utility, or shooting some demons. The mysterious overtones mix nicely with the game set-up to invite you to keep going down the demon filled rabbit hole. All of the action is presented with an ornate 3D graphics engine powered by Unity to make the experience that much more immersive. There’s a whole lot of content included with multiple levels in a couple of episodes with each one offering a specific location, and challenge. This is also the type of game that you will die often in, as you try to figure out exactly what to do under trying circumstances.
The Descent ($2.99 -> Free, Universal) is an intriguing adventure game that is a great pick-up while it’s one sale for free for a limited time.
