In today’s society the internet is one of the best resources for humor and people are constantly looking for funny pictures and media to make them laugh. However, despite having my Android device with me, there was a lack — in my opinion — of humor apps available on the platform. So I resorted to using my browser which just made the whole process of discovering and enjoying humorous content harder.
However, in the past few months two apps have been released with the high standards of design and usability that would make me use them on a regular basis. The first one is iGAG, linked to the 9GAG network and the second is Cheezburger, connected to the Cheezburger network. In the following article, I will explore both applications, highlighting the best features of each.
The first thing I should mention is that iGAG is not the official 9GAG application, I’ve tested both and found that the official app lacks some extra features. Don’t fret though, both apps share the 9GAG network so the content is the same whether you use iGAG or 9GAG.
After downloading iGAG, your first step should be logging into your 9GAG account — either with your standard username and password or through Facebook. Logging in will enable you to comment on the content and like it.
The iGAG interface is appealing and resembles the 9GAG UI.
The opening page you will be brought to is the “Whats’ Hot” feed. I pend most of my time on this feed as it provides the most popular posts. You can also change what is displayed here by bringing up the option on the left hand side. Here you can choose to see the posts which are: Trending and Fresh, or even look for random posts. However, I was disappointed by the fact that I needed to upgrade to the premium application if I want to search for a particular post.
If you look down further on the left hand side tab you can see two buttons called Online Mode and Night Theme. Upon tapping Online Mode, the app will start caching your front page for offline viewing when you don’t have a connection. This is a great feature, however, given the amount of data transferred, I would only recommend using this when connected to a WiFi network. The Night Theme button allows you to switch back and forth with a Day Theme, with only the dark gray background around posts turning to white and vice-versa.
The iGAG settings are easy to follow and change.
You can’t change that much in the app’s settings — most of them revolve around how much data you cache when entering offline mode. The app comes with advertisements, but these can be removed by upgrading to a premium version for $1.99. Not only does this remove adverts, but it also allows automatic offline caching, the opportunity to load more items on Offline Mode and a few other additional features, like searching which we discussed above.
As you can see, iGAG is a relatively simple application that still covers everything you need for viewing 9GAG. It’s definitely one of my favorite clients for the network.
The other big meme network on the internet is Cheezburger, and it works exactly the same way as 9GAG, showing you humorous pictures all the time.
The first thing you’ll realise is that Cheezburger isn’t as straight forward as iGAG. The opening page displays all of the Cheezburger sites — there is a lot of them! — so you will have to open each one to see the content and experiment to find which is best geared toward your type of humor. For that reason, I would recommend iGAG to those who aren’t familiar with the Cheezburger network.
There is a big network of sites within Cheezburger.
There is no way to like/comment on this application, but you can share the content to other apps. There is also a settings button at the top of the screen, but unfortunately the only helpful setting you can change is your bandwidth usage.
Great content is scattered across the Cheezburger network.
I really liked that this app wasn’t fully loaded with hundreds of advertisements and that you get the full package for free. It is perfect for those of you who prefer never to pay for applications. By comparison, iGAG has many limitations with the free version, the biggest being the lack of search.
In my opinion, Cheezburger is more content-focused than anything else. If you’re looking for an app to provide you with a range of different content across several humorous themes, then Cheezburger is definitely the application for you.
Both iGAG and Cheezburger have their own merits. They provide users with a lot of content that is relevant and easy to browse through. And, to be honest, that’s all you need in an app of this genre — the content is the main draw. However, only one of these applications goes the extra mile in providing a great user experience by merging an appealing interface with simple and useful settings — iGAG.
Personally, I switch between the two apps frequently in order to access different types of content from both networks. But what about you? Which apps do you use for your daily fix of humor? Let us know in the comments.
