When I was back there in seminary school, there was a person there who put forth the proposition that you can petition the Lord with prayer, you cannot petition the lord with prayer! The Doors is one of the most unique bands of all time that maintained a sound that was truly their own across such songs as Light My Fire, Break on Through, Hello I Love You, People Are Strange, The End, Riders On The Storm, L.A. Woman, Peace Frog, Love Her Madly, and The Soft Parade, lyrics introduced above. They started in L.A. back in 1965 with vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, drummer John Densmore, and guitarist Robby Krieger and rode a rocky ascent to notoriety until Morrison’s death in 1971. They’re most well known for their front man Jim Morrison, who provided poetic lyrics, wild intensity, unpredictability, and a sultry look and sound.
Everything about The Doors has been gathered together and recounted in the new self titled iPad app from Warner Music Group. The app is reminiscent of the other music apps History of Rock, Jimi Hendrix: The Complete Experience, and Sting 25. You’re given a complete timeline of The Doors complete with intricate narratives of the background of each major album, and milestones of the band. You’re given the full story of the dark and psychedelic band, and all that went into their distinctive style. It’s a wonderful read if you’re even remotely interested in the The Doors, and the text is infused with over 700 images, and 100 audio clips officially endorsed by the The Doors, and their record company president. There are also six original shorts tied to the major albums, and one of the best parts of the app is photos of the handwritten original recording track sheets.
In addition to the story, there’s a timeline, maps, photo gallery, and music room detailing all that went into The Doors. That includes the instruments and technology that went into the various recordings. All of it is presented beautifully with an eight-track like main menu that flows into each page offering a unique layout infused with various color schemes, memorabilia photos, audio clips, video interviews, and tons of photos. The design is extraordinary to round out such an interesting experience of diving into the depths that compose The Doors. Each album offers a new story to read through, and that includes clips of each track accompanied by backgrounds and details of each song on a given album. There’s just so much to appreciate within the app, and it can be a trip down memory lane for some with brand new tidbits, or a whole new engaging learning event.
The Doors ($4.99, iPad) is an expertly crafted app that is designed to help you appreciate The Doors like never before, and it’s such an immersive and interesting experience that is a should buy for any rock fan.
