Most vertically oriented shooters nudge you upward. Not Downwell. The game sees you descending into a deep, dark well teeming with monsters and traps that you wipe out by firing bullets from your boots.
It looks to be a unique take on the genre, and you can decide for yourself when it drops onto PS4 and Vita on May 24. You'll be able to snatch it up (or down) for only $4.99, and it supports cross-buy, so you'll get both versions for the price of one.
The developer, Ojiro Fumoto, recounted the game's development on a recent PlayStation blog. "Downwell started out as a small project that I, a college student at the time, worked on in my free time. It came about as one of many small prototypes [...] as an exercise to improve my game design skills."
Fumoto elaborated, saying he created one game a week and that Downwell was his 13th effort. The game's design got a tad out of hand as he forged on, but he's happy it will become part of the PlayStation family. "It's still pretty unreal to me that the game is now being released on PlayStation platforms, the consoles I've been playing for a large part of my life! My younger self would be super proud."
