EA has the benefit of the doubt no matter who wins the console war. If Sony wins, EA sells games, and if Microsoft wins, EA sells games. However, it goes without saying that it is in the best interest of EA that both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One make their way off of shelves and into the homes of gamers. That way, EA sells even more games.
EA isn’t interested in your Internet bickering. It wants both to succeed on an even footing, and it sees Sony’s early lead as a bit of imbalance to the order. However, CFO Blake Jorgensen estimates that Microsoft is catching up.
“Clearly Sony has jumped out to a lead with a great console and I think a great pricing strategy, but Microsoft is catching up quickly.”
Jorgensen’s estimate comes at a time when both company’s claim they have the lead. Microsoft knows it has sold less than Sony with 10 million units shipped to stores worldwide and actual sales figures probably hovering just under that. However, it claims it has the fastest selling console on the market thanks to better blockbuster games and a $50 price drop for the holiday season.
However, Sony dismisses the idea, suggesting that the PlayStation 4 could be outselling the Xbox One 2:1 at this point with at least 13.5 million sold over the last year. It has spent ten consecutive months on the top of the NPD estimations, so we will see if Xbox One’s price drop changes that next month in December.
Either way, EA is bound to sell a lot of games this winter, so don’t feel bad for them.
