Apple presented two new iPhones at yesterday’s event, and we told you all about the new top tier iPhone 5S already. There’s a second model, and it’s the iPhone 5C and it is effectively the replacement for the iPhone 5. The question is what exactly is the iPhone 5C, and what new does it bring to the table. The iPhone 5C includes many of the iPhone 5 features including a 4” retina display, A6 chip, LTE, 8 megapixel photo camera, and 1080P video camera. The main new addition is colorful rear cases with five colors to choose from with blue, green, yellow, pink, and white. It’s an iPhone 5 on the inside, and a whole new colorful expression on the outside.
Apple has chosen a plastic outer shell, but it’s not the plastic you’re used to as Apple has used a steel reinforced structure to solidify the plastic, and also act as the antenna. The rear case is one solid piece, and one solid color with no seams, joints, or any gaps. The entire iPhone 5C is slightly, though noticeably, thicker than the iPhone 5 that it replaces, but it also includes a slightly larger battery. The colors are definitely what sets the device apart with each of the five colors offering bright glossy fun colors that are easily distinguishable from any previous iPhones. The color is also infused into the stock home screen background so that there’s a colorful consistency between the device, and what’s on screen. One other slight addition is an improved HD front facing camera.
Going into the announcement, the iPhone 5C was all about low cost, but following the announcement we see that wasn’t the case. The 5C fits in the niche that the iPhone 5 would have been in as Apple introduced the 5S to take the top price of $199, with the 5C at $99, and 4S for free, all with two year contracts. The unlocked contract price is $549, so again this isn’t a cheap iPhone. Instead, it seems that the iPhone 5C is an iPhone to appeal to new audiences based on look and feel, rather than price. It’s also the device that fits very well with iOS 7 thanks to the color palette used across iOs 7 and the 5C.
Finally as an added bonus, new iPhone 5C purchases come with Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iMovie, and iPhoto for free. The iPhone 5C will be available online and in-stores starting September 20th, and pre-orders start on September 13th. The device will be available at 16GB for $99 or 32GB for $199 with a two year contract, and unlocked prices are $549 and $649, respectively. Additionally, there’s a line of $29 silicon cases, with six color choices.
The iPhone 5C works like the iPhone 5, but has an all new look and feel.
