"Forever Evil" artist, David Finch, sat down with us to talk about what' s going on in DC Comics' main event and the experiences working with Geoff Johns.
Charlie Chang: Is there one particular character from the Crime Syndicate that you love drawing and why?
David Finch: Yeah, there really is. My favorite is Johnny Quick; he’s normally not the type of character that I like to draw. I would not have thought in a million years and it’s really all about Geoff Johns’ writing. Johnny Quick is an impulsive thrill seeker so when I draw him I always have that in my head. So when I started drawing him I started giving him an evil smile and making him a little crazier looking and I’ve had a lot of fun with that.
CC: It’s interesting that you bring up the writing inspiring the drawings because every single one of those characters has such a different voice. Since Johnny is your favorite to draw, who is your favorite character from that team?
DF: I think for me Super Woman is the most interesting character in that group. It’s difficult for me to know exactly what I can say without spoiling anything but she has a very interesting and very close relationship with Ultraman and Owlman. I don’t think that’s going to go anywhere great and she’s a real manipulative character which makes her a lot of fun.
CC: There are a lot of aspects Owlman’s costume that plays on Batman and then Ultraman’s is more or less the same as Superman’s with the exception of the logo. Super Woman is the one who is all dark versus Wonder Woman’s bright primary colored costume.
DF: Yeah and that was a very conscious decision. Actually, in all fairness, Frank Quitely did a series with all these characters in Grant Morrison’s Earth 2, and she had that color scheme which I really liked. I also thought it was very appropriate. When I was designing these characters I got a written description that didn’t describe what they looked like but who they were from Geoff Johns. He’s just the master of really being able to boil down to who a character really is. That really helped so when I was doing the designs, I called him up and we did a screen share, so I drew while he was watching me talk through the designs of each of the character so that was a very collaborative experience.
CC: What has been the most fun for you from this series? Trinity War was such a great lead up to Forever Evil. Do you have a favorite issue so far?
DF: I think "Justice League #24" by Ivan Reis and Geoff Johns is my favorite. I have the pencils because they’re publishing the pencils now and I have looked at that book so many times that it’s just incredible. It’s such a great story but Ivan is such a master. I’m an artist so I read the story once but I’ll look at the pictures a million times.
