With over 200 million Android handsets now in global use, the news that Facebook for Android usage now trumps that for iPhone should come as no surprise but it’s still a significant development in the smartphone world.
Facebook’s Android app now has 58.3 million average daily users compared with an average of 57.4 million daily users of its iPhone app, according to fresh statistics from AppData.
This data goes some way to explaining why Mark Zuckerberg’s social network was so keen to launch its new Timeline feature on Google-powered devices before those running iOS.
While Facebook’s Android app still trails the iPhone in monthly average users, it was released a year after its iPhone rival in September 2009, it nows totals 85.4 million users to the iPhone app’s 99.1 million. In terms of “stickiness”, the number of users who return on a daily basis, the Android app’s 68.2 per cent leads over the iPhone app’s 57.9 per cent.
