Stone Fox is a book of fiction, which is based on what the writer calls, “an old Rocky Mountain legend.” The setting is Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The main characters are a ten-year-old orphan named little Willy, his Grandfather, and his sled dog, Searchlight. The story is about what happens when little Willy’s Grandfather becomes ill and cannot care for himself or take care of his potato farm any longer. To save his home, little Willy must find a way to harvest the potatoes and also raise $500 to pay the taxes on the farm. It looks hopeless but with the help of his loyal dog, Searchlight, and a Shoshone Mountain Man named Stone Fox, little Willy helps his Grandfather and saves the farm. But this victory comes at great cost, as little Willy must accept the loss of a beloved friend. Love and sacrifice are the most important themes of this story.
I found this book entertaining because it was very well written and I could imagine how the characters felt. It was easy to become absorbed by this book. The book was fun to read, cool to picture stone fox.
I found this book educational because I learned about potato farming and dog sled racing. I also found this book educational because I learned about how people lived at that time period, and how people got around.
