We’ve seen a lot of Final Fantasy XV recently because of its lengthy new trailer, freshly distributed screenshots and small second demo. The game looks wonderful, both in a visual and generic sense.
With the Platinum Demo playable, though, Digital Foundry was able to put together a performance analysis for both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions. While the two platforms see their stats discussed in proximity, the feature seems more focused on the overall performance of Final Fantasy XV itself.
Make no mistake, the game performs better on the Playstation 4 than Xbox One. That much isn’t surprising.
Digital Foundry learned that the average framerate for both consoles approached 30fps, sometimes sitting at that mark or dipping with more action. The PlayStation 4 held that framerate with more stability. However, both consoles saw big dips, sometimes stretching below 20fps, something a lot of gamers will absolutely find unacceptable.
As for resolution, the PlayStation 4 regularly runs at 900p with an increase to 1080p if the game isn’t taxing the system too hard.

This logic also applies to Xbox One with its middle-ground 1408 x 792 native resolution. In reducing its rendering load to a theoretical minimum, 1568 x 882 is Xbox One’s highest resolution in this demo, while its lowest point is just 1360 x 768.
In other words, Xbox One always runs at a lower pixel output than PS4 and it translates to a perceptibly clearer image for the latter, in the main. However, image quality takes a hit due to the aggressive in-house post-process anti-aliasing, causing the image to blur on each console regardless of resolution in use. Coverage is also spotty, particular on Noctis and Carbuncle’s hair, and high contrast elements can flare up in aliasing for a few frames before returning to a blurred state.
