Samsung has released quite a few ads that directly make fun of Apple – or at least they’re trying to (see this one, for example). And now LG has started doing the same thing, although only in South Korea, its home country.
Korea Times has it that, yesterday, LG placed ads “in all major local media” – showing its Optimus G flagship Android smartphone slicing through a bitten apple. The text of the ad reads: “a moment’s choice will decide your next two years”, suggesting you should check out the Optimus G before buying an iPhone (although without specifically saying why the Optimus G is better than Apple’s handset).
Moreover, LG Uplus (the third largest South Korean carrier, and an LG Group subsidiary) is featuring anti-iPhone posters in its stores. The posters contain phrases like “iPhone 5? Really disappointing”, and say that its 4 inch display is “too small”, while noting that the handset doesn’t have NFC, and neither DMB-TV (this is usable only in Korea anyway).
Still, LG denies it’s attacking Apple. An LG Uplus spokesperson has reportedly declared: “Our posters contain facts on the iPhone 5, and is not slander. It is just a fact that is has no NFC, no DMB. Its screen is comparatively small so that is also true. Other nuanced phrases are usually adopted for marketing. We are absolutely not targeting Apple as a company and the messages on the posters are not our official stance.”
Of course, LG Uplus doesn’t sell the iPhone 5 (only SK Telecom and KT are offering it in Korea), so this campaign is shooting at other carriers and at Apple.
Like Samsung, LG isn’t just one of Apple’s competitors, but one of its partners, too – for example, LG Display is providing panels for the iPhone 5.
