We love a top new bit of physics puzzler action here at the heart of the Android reviewniverse, especially when it’s a strikingly stylish twisted twisty turny one with the dark edge of a Tim Burton animation. Get ready for the grippingly Gothic feel of Freeze!
There are some apps that you take an instant like to by being both easy on the eye and immediate easy to play, simultaneously lulling you into a false sense of security and making you feel superior. Then, a handful of pleasingly passable puzzles in suddenly it slaps you in the face with a cry of “Not so fast, Smug-bloke!” This is one of those apps.
Winner of the Indie Prize Award 2013 from the Casual Games Association, this is essentially a mind-mobilising maze game with minimalist, monochrome graphics and utterly original gameplay. Across 25 levels of greyscale genius it’s your – often seemingly simple – task to move an eyeball (the “hero” of the piece) around a series of labyrinths (his “cell”), avoiding a variety of ball-bursting obstacles to help him escape using only your iron-grasp of the law of gravity and a handy Freeze! button that puts Newton’s noggin-bother on hold.
Gameplay is effortlessly smooth and sits somewhere between fun and infuriating depending on your tilting and turning talents, whilst the physics are faultless. And with additional levels available for purchase afterwards you can keep feeding the addiction that you’ll undoubtedly develop.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Cool, creative and expertly crafted, Freeze! is nothing less than a work of app ingenuity that’ll have physics puzzle fans hooked straight from the starting cell.
